What Teaching Means to Me

Teaching is a life, not just a job. I want to give the children I teach every opportunity I can. No matter where they are from, or where they are at intellectually every student deserves to have a chance to become something. As a teacher I have the chance to make a difference. I have never wanted to sit behind a desk and just go along in life not making a difference and not affecting anybody’s life positively and for the better everyday. So as a teacher I could teach and grow these students to be smart respectful teenagers and adults. I could make a impact in their lives!

Why I Want to Teach K-5

I am a Special Education Major K-6. I believe that elementary students are the ones you can mold and create a want to learn. So many students do not want to learn. I believe that is fault of their past teachers. I have always had the passion to want to learn and be my best and I truly believe it was because of the amazing elementary teachers that took the time to invest their passion in me. Early elementary as in K-5 is when the students learn the most important things in education as in the Alphabet, basic math, and creating sentences. They also learn the respect and the drive to do great then if they are taught the right way.

Special Education Children

Special education students may have a disability but they can work past it. With the right motivation and drive a special education student can do just as well or better as a regular student. So many teachers and parents like to treat these students as babies, this only handicaps them more. So as a special education teacher I will be teaching elementary that it when I can put it in their mind that they can be just as smart and successful as other students. This is also the time to teach parents how to give their children a chance to make something of themselves.

Challenge is Key

Many students’ minds do not get pushed or challenged like they should. Children's brains are like muscles the more you push and challenge them the more they grow. I want my class to feel challenged to learn more and grow more as a person. I want to know at the end of the day that I have pushed them in the right direction to success.

Parents and Teachers Should Unite

It takes a team to give a child the best learning experience possible. That team is the teacher and the parents. Parents should keep up with what the student should be doing at home. A parent should want to be involved. Children with parents involved in their education are more likely to succeed. It is also part of the teacher’s job to make sure this unitization occurs. A teacher should know the parents and should have regular meeting or conferences with the student’s parents to make sure the child is doing the best he or she can.

I Don't Want to Burp Back

The one method I hate is the "Burp Back" method. This helps no one. This method does not allow the student to preserve the information in their long term memory. It stays in their short term for about a week then is lost into the abyss. We as teachers should stop worrying about the standardized test and more on our students. I want my students walk away from my class knowing they learned something. Is that not what every teacher wants?

Extra Help Through the Internet

The internet is an amazing teaching tool. To not use it would be plain ignorance. The internet can show children different things as in picture and other information on the subject you just taught. It is like an extra hand when you need it.

Also, with the world changing computers are becoming a primary thing. As teachers we are to get our students ready for the world. By not using the internet and computer we are not educating them the way we need to. If children were taught to use the internet a teacher could keep a blog for students who were sick.

In addition, the internet in the classroom helps the parent understand what is going on by viewing your blog. It allows them to be apart of their child’s education.

Opening Students Minds

Teaching opens so many windows and doors to the mind. There are so many different places and ideas in the world that people do not open their mind to. So in my classroom I want to open my children’s minds to the wonders of the world. I want them to get out of their comfort zones and allow their mind to wonder. in the south we tend to be close minded what our parents taught is what is true, but so much more exploration and scientific works have been done to prove what our parents thought were true to be false. I want my students to know there is a world beyond their city. Where there are beautiful lakes, oceans, sculptures, and mountains.

Other then them opening their minds I want them to be open to new teaching methods. Such as going outside instead of sitting inside, or open to going on the computer instead of reading a book. So many different things and shame on us for not sharing!

Encouraging Students

So many people are negative in our world today. Hopefully by setting a positive attitude in my classroom I hope to encourage the students. Encouragement gives the student hope and the thought process of "I can do it". This allows the students to work harder. It gives them a positive want to learn attitude to studying and classroom assignments.

You never know what a child is going through at home, but as long as you make them feel important and smart at school they will do well. The classroom should become a place to want to come. Children should want to come learn and love to be there. That is at least how I want my classroom to be!
